Open Suse 12 and EC2

paulo
Hi,

Uploading OpenSuse to EC2 will incur in additional fees? Or is just Suse Enterprise?

Can someone let me know?

For instance if I upload a Micro instance will I be billed according to Suse Enterprise fees @ http://aws.amazon.com/suse/ or will they be free like the Micro instance of Amazon?

You have to have an EC2 account with amazon. I think there's a free trial, but usually free trials end in paying something and I do know amazon charges for the regular service. So I wouldn't attempt it if I were you, unless you intend on paying for the service. =/

but as long as openSUSE is concerned, openSUSE wont charge you
anything. You can as well install SLES or SLED (your link), only
updates/support is to be paid

Hallo,

Uploading to openSUSE to EC2 per se, will not result in additional costs. However, using SUSE Studio to do so will. We are using SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) images to do the upload, which means that a SLE instance is started during the time of the upload. This will cost you a couple of cents. After your upload has finished, there are no additional costs other than the usual Amazon charges.

True. You can even build your openSUSE EC2 image in Studio and then upload that on your own using Amazon's API or the shell scripts that are available. In that case you won't even have to pay the few cents I mentioned above.

True.

In conclusion to what I wrote before:
The Enterprise fees only apply for the time the upload takes. Running your instance will be like any other micro instance. No additional charges other than the standard Amazon fees.

Hi,

I can tell you that this is not true.
I UL the images directly from SuseStudio and I got billed for every hour my instance of OpenSUSE was running.

So there seams to be a bug in this process?

Here is my forum post on Amazon but after initial response I haven’t heard a word from them:
